An Evening of Tastes With Charles Neal

Charles Neal is a leading authority on single-estate and bottled French brandies from Armagnac, Cognac and Calvados. These spirits are some of the most natural brandies available, made without the usage of boisé, sugar, or caramel. They are hand-bottled directly from cask in extremely limited quantities.

Charles's intense interest in the brandies of France has prompted him to write two books on the subject. The first, in 1997, offers a detailed look at cognac's sophisticated cousin, Armagnac. In the fall of 2011, Flame Grape Press published Neal's 700-page tome about Calvados, a brandy based from pears and apples produced in the Normandy region of France.

Tonight’s event includes: tasting of 8-10 brandies, with discussion led by Charles, Nibbles by Upstairs 2 and a copy of Calvados The Spirit of Normandy, signed by Charles Neal.

The French Wine Scholar program is a U.S. wine industry-endorsed and Wines of France-endorsed wine study and certification program.

 It was developed by the French Wine Academy to provide current, accurate information and validate proficiency in the wines and wine regions of France-the foundation of all wine knowledge.

Intermediate to advanced students of wine and wine professionals who follow this in-depth curriculum and pass the exam will earn the French Wine Scholar (FWS) post-nominal.

The exam is given in multiple-choice format. There are 100 questions covering all of the wine regions of France. Passing score is 75. 4 classes, 20 hours, over 50 wines tasted! Instructors are Mike Greene D.W.S. and C.W.S. and Michelle Davis, F.W.S.

This class was previously named Absolute Beginning Wine Appreciation, but that title limited the participants to people who knew that didn’t know the basics of wine. Truth be told, there is a lot of fundamental information about wine that most people have just skipped over in order to get to the drinking part! So whether a beginner or hardened vet, this class will teach you something you didn’t know or at least were not sure of in the complex, wonderful world of wine.

While based on the information offered in Absolute Beginners, this is a newly structured Power Point type of class presented along with nine great wines to illustrate the information. The most heard comments after this class are usually along the lines of “I’ve been drinking wine for 15 years, going tasting in Santa Barbara and Napa, etc, and I learned more about wine in the first 20 minutes of this class than I did in all that time!” Join Tasting & Seminars Director JB Severin for an entertaining revelation.

Every 1st and 3rd Wednesday, Upstairs 2 serves an amazing four course dinner prepared by our chef, Todd Barrie, and paired with four wines from around the world, chosen by our Sommelier, Marilyn Snee. Each time, the food and wine served represents a different wine region. There will be a brief discussion of each wine and its pairing.
